How Gender Roles Affect the Women of Public Relations By, Roland Cailles As a public relations person, I have the pleasure of working with some of the most talented and creative women in the professional world. My industry, known for its fast-paced lifestyle and feminine-friendly working environment, is filled with women. And yet, though women out number men at most agencies, its an industry still dominated by men. The old-school network, just as it is in the advertising world, still exists in PR. Big agencies like Edelman, Golin-Harris, and Burson-Marstellar, get their names from the men that founded them. Thats why I feel so privileged to have completed my first internship at a certified women-owned agency: Carolyn Grisko Associates. The top four ranking women at the firm- the CEO Carolyn, the COO, and two of the VPs- are all women; a rarity in the PR world. Times are changing. Its time women lead the way in the business world the same as men do. Consider these stats from the book The Guide to American Graduate Schools, by Harold R. Doughty: •From 1995 to 2006, the number of women graduating with either a masters or doctorate degree has increased 150 percent. •In 2007, the number of doctorates awarded reached an all-time high of 55,300 with women earning almost 50 percent of those conferred. •Its projected that by 2016 women will represent 56 percent of all doctorates awarded. These stats should serve as an indication women have their eyes set on the highest levels of the working world. A Study of Gender Roles in PR A couple months ago, I participated in a study by Victoria Geyer, an associate professor and grad student at Hofstra University. She was doing research for a paper that asked the question, Does gender play a role in the public relations industry? She theorized that most women chose PR as a major early on in their academic careers. Because most men came into PR from other disciplines, they had the business classes and backgrounds to help them excel at managing their own businesses. Particularly, men came into the PR industry armed with contract negotiation skills, a trait lacking in most PR women. Victoria believes that the key for women in PR is to cultivate their business acumen. Women in PR are renowned for their communication skills, but where they sometimes fall short is in understanding how to run a business. The Money Question A teacher of mine who was a former associate vice president of media at Paramount Pictures, once gave me some of the best business advice Ive ever received. Always ask the money question, she told me. Where is the money coming from? Whos paying for it? And why? She said she loved media over other aspects of marketing because they were in charge of the budget, and therefore, yielded much power. I have the feeling my teachers statement applies across the board. When running a business, the money question is the most important one. Have an answer to that question at all times, and youll be thinking like the CEOs of the world.

When to Take an Unpaid Internship By, Rachel Martin I have finally come to the realization that I have a good resume. Ive worked hard and I am proud of what Ive done. So, I totally agree with Christine in her post Changing Fields when she says, celebrate your victories. How you do that differs from person to person. Maybe you go out of a happy hour with friends or a nice dinner. For me, it was redoing my resume. I was looking for a job in the interactive world and got some great hits and a job offer with my newly polished resume. The problem is its a little below me, but its exactly what I want to be doing. I was offered a 3-month UNPAID internship to learn how the website works and then after that term I would become a real employee. During the interview she told me I had the position and wanted me to meet with a few other people who had gone through the internship and were now real employees. A newly graduated, tall boy walked into the room holding my resume. Someone 5 years younger and with not as much experience was about to interview me. I had two options: be a total snob and talk about how qualified I am for this job or find out what his background was and how he fell into this job right out of college. I chose the latter. I realized that we just took different paths and he decided to go into websites immediately and I chose magazines. Bottom line is, Im totally stoked to start this internship even though Im 28 years old. It feels right on so many levels and I know this internship will turn into something bigger. I have No Idea What Im Doing

I have No Idea What Im Doing Theres a saying, Be careful what you wish for. Have you ever found that what you wished for came true and it wasnt quite what you had in mind? Perhaps it is that dream job you landed or maybe it is the great assignment or maybe your side business is taking off. Sometimes we are caught off guard by the our successes. Perhaps theres a great learning opportunity in this. For those who are planners or analytical, this change can open up a pandoras box of unexpected situations which can result in feeling overwhelmed. For those that regularly go with the flow, it isnt so much of a big deal. However, they will have their own set of challenges. One of the things I think is OK to admit, to yourself, is that you have no idea what you are doing.This is not to be an excuse ordenial of accountability. When you do this, it might give you permission to make mistakes. It might give you permission to ask for advice. It might give you permission to actually learn something new. I have been confessing this a lot lately and each time I do, Ive been able to better evaluate what Ive learned. Ive met so many people who have gone 6, 8, 10 months supposedly looking for work on their own, only to realize, they had no idea what they were doing. Why did it take so long to come to this realization? My hunch, money became an issue. PAIN. We respond/react to it. All this means is that there are vast opportunities to learn and grow. None of the great leaders have been able to do it on their own. Ask for advice and guidance from those who do know what they are doing. Remember, however, that we are unique and that advice is not absolute.
